In conjunction with Mexico’s Independence Day, September 16th celebrates a staple of the Mexican cuisine. Yes, you’re correct: September 16 is National Guacamole Day!
You can’t deny it … there’s something about guacamole. With chips, on your tacos, and even as a veggie dip, it’s delicious. When you get it right, this avocado concoction is amazing. Addicting, even. But getting that perfect combination of ingredients including avocados, lime, cilantro and salt takes a little practice and a lot of taste testing. (Our favorite part.)
During a recent stay at Villa La Estancia, our good friend and a personal chef, Hector, stopped in for dinner and to share his professional tips for making the perfect guacamole. Hector attributes it to one main thing: perfectly ripened avocados. Like the Goldielocks conundrum, avocados that are too hard won’t mash properly, and avocados that are too soft just don’t have the right flavor. That “just right” avocado is soft when squeezed, but not (in technical terms) “mushy.”
It seems like everyone has a bit of a different recipe, and a lot depends on preference, but here is a recipe we’ve come to love!
La Estancia Vacations’ Awesome Guacamole Recipe
4 (perfectly) ripe avocados
3 limes, juice only
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 medium white onion, finely chopped (we’ve used red onion with great results, too)
¼ tsp ground black pepper
½ tsp salt
2 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
Small can of corn (optional)
1 Serrano pepper (optional)
While we can’t sing the praises of say a margarita’s health benefits, guacamole offers a lot more than flavor. Avocados are full of healthy fats and over 20 vitamins … so keep dipping and Happy Guacamole Day!
